What to Know About Computer Monitor Recycling

It’s easy to give out, toss, or recycle old items these days. And computer monitors aren’t an exception. At Starr Dumpsters, we offer a customized plan to help you get rid of unwanted monitors, easily. In this article, we’re going to cover some important things about computer monitor recycling.

CRT and LCD Monitor Displays

CRT, or cathode ray tube, monitors are the “household name” before the advent of LCD. You find them in homes, offices, organization, and business communities. After LCD, or liquid crystal display hits the market, it’s not long enough before people start finding the former uninteresting, outdated and a space-taker. This led to the massive disposal of CRT monitors.

And here is the kicker.

CRTs are Dangerous to Recycle

There are components and chemicals in cathode ray monitors (CRT) that are extremely dangerous to human, and this makes for the type of care required to handle, dispose, or recycle them.

For example, a prominent metal found in cathode ray monitors is lead, which is very dangerous to human health. A glass vacuum of such monitor contains about four to eight pounds of lead. Another toxic metal contained is cadmium as well as some composition of arsenic. When not properly handled, they can find their way back to the human environment through soil, plant, and animals.

And surprisingly,

LCD Monitors aren’t Infallible

Although LCD seems the favorite of many, they also contain toxic metals such as lead, though in a relatively less amount. LCD adopts a crystal display technology that changes color based on an electric charge, which makes them a safer and better option compared with their predecessor.

Still, the toxic compounds contained pose a threat to human health as well as the environment. That’s why many states or areas have regulatory law guiding computer monitor recycling. It’s even a serious crime to toss or dump a computer monitor carelessly in some places.

What you can do?

There’re some ways you can repurpose your old and unused monitor. We’ll take a glimpse at few of those.

First, as long as your device is working, you can gift it to a friend or loved one. When you find them unattractive or unfit for your personality, someone else might appreciate them.

Also, if you’ve got the expertise, time, and patience, you can repurpose to suit a new cause. But we’d warn you to do this, because of the hazardous chemicals and components, only if you aren’t confident about your skills.

However, we can help you get rid of monitor junks in your storage units or homes at Starr Dumpsters.
