How to Completely Tear Down a Fence

Whether you’re looking to replace your old fencing, or just tear out your fencing for good, it isn’t the easiest process – especially if you have no idea what you’re doing. Whatever the case may be for your need to tear down your current fence, Starr Dumpsters is here to guide you through the process step-by-step!

Tearing down your fence may seem like it’s going to take you forever, but if you follow the steps below, you’ll have that old fence down in no time at all!

4 steps to tear down your fence:

1. Prep for removal

The bid day is here where you are going to tear down that old fencing of yours. Before you can get into the meat of the project, there is some prep work you need to get done to make the later steps easier. Here’s everything you need to do before tearing down your fence:

  • Make some calls -- Before you start tearing down your fence, you’ll want to call your utility company to ensure there are no major lines near or under your fence line, and if there is, you’ll want them to come and mark where they are so you don’t cause any damage. You’ll also want to make a quick call to your local government to see if you need approval for this job – you may need a permit to tear out your fence and put up a new one. Lastly, you’ll want to communicate your project to your neighbors so they are aware of what’s going on.
  • Get the right equipment -- Tearing down your fence isn’t as easy as knocking the paneling down. You may need some tools to make the process easier and safer, so make sure you have everything you need before you start tearing it down.

2. Disassemble the gates

Now that you have all the prep work done, it’s time to get to tearing it down. You’ll want to start this process by removing your gates. This can be done by unscrewing the hinges from the gate posts and lifting them away and putting them into your dumpster. This is where Starr Dumpsters comes into play! You can rent any size dumpster you need from us to make tearing your fence down easier.

3. Remove the panels

Now that you have the gates down, it’s time to start taking the fence paneling down. If you don’t plan to salvage these panels, you can simply cut them off of each other and place them into your dumpster. If you’re hoping to reuse these panels, you’ll want to determine where they are attached, unfasten the rails from the posts, and pry them loose of one another.

4. Pull out the posts

The last and final step of tearing down your fence is removing the posts that are cemented into the ground. While you may think ‘sweet I’m almost done’, this is probably the hardest part of the job. Since the posts are cemented into the ground, you’re going to have to grab the post, do some wiggling, gain some traction, and pull the fence post as hard as you can. Please be extra careful while doing this!

  • Roll-Off Dumpsters

Have you ever noticed those large seemingly out-of-place dumpsters by worksites or businesses? While there are usually dumpsters available in most neighborhoods and business sites, they might not be enough or permissible for large projects such as business renovations...

  • Commercial Dumpsters

When you have a large construction project at your workplace or house, you should plan for the resulting disposal of the waste and debris. Piling up the rubble can take away from valuable real estate that could otherwise be used for productivity. Instead of making trip after trip to the local landfill, consider a commercial dumpster.
